My Creative Month – October/November/December 2016

I have a lot of catching up to do. Sadly, for various reasons, my blog came really short in 2016 and early 2017. It is part of my New Year’s Resolution to change that. So first of all I would like to catch up with all the things I had planned to post about after mid-October but didn’t get around to.

October

October was by far the busiest month—and the one where I did the most in the entire year. It is always a particularly busy month since there is both Halloween and the beginning of a new semester coming up at the end of it.

A lot of things came short last year. Luckily, Halloween (for a change) wasn’t one of them. There were a lot more things that I wanted to do for Halloween, but at the end, I’m pretty happy about what I did get done:

My Creative Month – August/September 2016

I know I keep saying this about my months, but August and September have been extremely stressful again, both at work and in my personal life. Especially September. August was a little more quiet at first but got stressful toward the end.

I hate how little time I have for the things I would really like to do, especially how little energy I have left after a long day of work or doing my chores.

On top of everything, I’m still busy preparing my courses. I’m teaching an introduction to psychology this semester and the research for that is really extensive. I’ll think twice next time before I take on something so research intensive as this one. I already started preparing in July, right after the previous semester finished. I still have so much left to do with only one month to go. I’m really starting to panic a little.

Still, I did get to a couple of things… Continue reading

My Creative Month – June/July 2016

June and July were again quite busy months, especially since most of my free time went into course preparations and a couple of other things I had to take care of.

Fourth of July BBQ

My more or less only creative activity for June was planning and preparing my Fourth of July BBQ.

I tried out a lot of new recipes and got some things for decoration. It was a lot of fun. I was quite good with the preparation this time as well. It all got done in due time.

However, it’s the end of July already and I still haven’t gotten around to post about it. Not exactly in line with my resolution to post seasonal posts more timely. Oh, well, I’m working on it…

My Creative Month – April/May 2016

Bullet Journal

Although I just started with it, the Bullet Journal concept invaded my whole life by and by in under two months. I find that it makes me so much more productive and well organized; and on top of that also feeling like I get so much more done.

I’m still working on my set-up and trying to break old habits of using up as little space as possible. I’d like to give it more room and be a little more creative, especially in my daily planning, because I know that this will keep me doing it in the long run.

This is how the Bullet Journal has taken over: Continue reading

My Creative Month – February/March 2016

February

After somewhat of a creative hiatus in December and January, I used my 2-week vacation in February to get back on track and back into writing on a more regular basis.

I hadn’t even realized before how much I needed this downtime away from a busy life and every-day obligations. It really helps to be someplace else to get your head free.

My Creative Month – December 2015/January 2016

December and January were again so busy with work and preparations for my course that I hardly had time for being creative, let alone write about it.

DIY Jewelry

I can’t really take credit for this. I’d seen this DIY jewelry at craft fairs a couple of times before and finally thought I’d give it a try. I chose the parts and how to combine them, but I’m not made for this fiddly work, so my boyfriend heroically jumped in and did it for me real quick.

They look really nice, but I’m sure I won’t try that again anytime soon.

Decorating for Christmas

One big thing in December, of course, was Christmas decoration.

I bought a round glass vase and filled it with all kinds of Christmas stuff: a chain of lights, angel hair, Christmas tree ball ornaments etc.

I needed two tries until I liked the result, but now I think it turned out really nice:

I also got a tree-shaped Christmas plate. Whoever said plates have to be round… 😉

And those tree-shaped Christmas lights I already got last year but I still love them…

New Recipe for December

I had a package of low fat curd cheese left and was looking for a recipe to use it up. The almonds I replaced with chocolate flakes. A very good recipe that I’ll definitely add to my collection.

Photo Books

I finished my photo book for the year 2015 and started one for a weekend trip we took shortly before Christmas…

For the 2015 book I tried out a new format, this time a quadratic one. I haven’t had them printed yet, so I’m excited to see how this turns out in real life…

As you can see, I’m still into full images on one page.

Organizing

I made some significant progress in organizing my room and supplies. There’s still a lot to do, but some progress at last!

My Creative Month – October/November 2015

The end-of-October post would have come out so late that I decided it would make more sense to publish it together with the November post. I could have skipped October but since it is my favorite month of the year, creativitywise, due to the Halloween season, I felt I still wanted to include it.

Also, I don’t really have much to show and tell for November anyway. As was to be expected, preparing my academic writing course that I’ve been teaching since the end of October has consumed basically all my free time both in October and November. Continue reading

My Creative Month – September 2015

September was a crazy and chaotic month where a lot got in the way of my creative projects. I don’t want to go into detail, but there were basically almost three weeks out of four were I could not do anything. This continued into the beginning of October, which is why this post comes out so unusually late.

Thus while I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t get half as much done as I’d planned, I’m quite happy that I did get done as much as I did. Continue reading

My Creative Month – August 2015

I was quite busy in August—both workwise and creativity-wise. I’m totally exhausted but also impressed about all the things I did get done despite my tight working schedule.

Pizza Rolls

I love good food and I love cooking and baking. But I have way less time for it than I’d like. So I’m always excited about finding interesting-looking recipes but hardly ever get around to trying them out.

A few months ago, therefore, I made the resolution that I’d try out at least one new recipe every month. So far that is working, although it hardly ever gets more than one. But hey, that’s already progress in comparison to zero! 😉

The new recipe in August were those delicious pizza rolls, which I’m very likely to make again since my folks and I loved them so much.

DIY Notebook and Folder Decoration

For back to school time, I worked on three ways to decorate notebooks and folders. Not just nice for school, but also for the (home)office. 😉

Photo Book Year 2015, Part 1

Since the year is more than half over, I decided I could already start with the photo book for this year…

year2015-2

Since in last year’s photo book I found that I’d included too few pictures (it takes too short a time to look through it), this time I wanted to include more pictures. So I already filled one book and will be splitting it up in two parts again.

I’m also trying out a new format: 20×20 cm. I’m curious to see how it turns out once it is printed. However, I can already say that I like A5 horizontal much better because pictures are usually roughly in that format and it is just easier to fit them in.

New Cover for DIY Blogger’s Notebook

Carrying it around in my bag 24/7 made the cover of the blogger’s notebook look not so nice anymore.

I thought it was time for something more durable. I’m going to show you more of it in its own post soon.

Story Cubes

I’ve told you guys about the story cubes before when I discovered them in January. Now I took the next step and got some myself. I haven’t had time to try them out yet because they just arrived. But I still love them. I’m very excited to try them out.

My Creative Month – July 2015

Fourth of July

I made some sweet treats for July 4th: A Stars & Stripes pie as well as red, white, and blue cake pops. Yummy! 😉

DIY Planner

I continued working with my planner and wrote a step-by-step guide on how you can make your own DIY Planner.

I’m so glad I kept the “binding” flexible! I had to add a couple of pages that I hadn’t thought of before and replaced some that didn’t quite work the way I thought they would.

And one very big change had to be made: I was hoping to do my weekly planning in there, but it is just no use. Since it is not replacing my pocket calendar, I just grew tired of copying all my appointments in there, and I didn’t really see the point.

For a while I thought I could just use week planning sheets that didn’t have the weekdays on them and have my pocket calendar there when planning.

But the second thing that didn’t work out was that I thought I could take a few minutes every morning or evening to look into the planner. That, too, is just not happening. I have way more time to look at all that when I’m commuting. So again, no use to have this in there.

I’ve been experimenting with to do list apps for a while, and they nicely complement my weekly planning on paper (because they are good for errands and shopping lists, etc. … i.e. things that are done quickly). But for me they just don’t work as weekly planning devices. I need paper.

So I knew the days of my tiny pocket calendar were up and I had to replace it, which I did:

DIY Calendar

As much as I love to have a tiny pocket calendar with a nice overview, I just had to admit to myself that I needed a new pocket calendar that would give me some room for doing my week planning while commuting.

Long searches on the internet made me realize that exactly what I wanted didn’t exist. I found something called a “weekly notebook” (or “Wochennotizkalender” for my German readers 😉 ), which was close. It has a double page per week with the left page being a normal calendar page with one week and a lined right page for week notes.

But I thought that this was still too little space for sensible planning. I wanted one double page for the week days followed by one double page for notes, with my own headlines, preferably.

The most important thing for me, though, was that it had to be A6 for the well-known reasons that my handbag is just too small for A5 and that I don’t want to carry so much heavy stuff around with me. My bag is heavy enough as it is.

I’ll describe how I made it in its own post, but here is a picture of it:
